Habit and structure. Thallus upright, to 6 cm in height, dark red, cartilaginous, irregularly branched, often with several percurrent axes arising from a common base. Axes terete to slightly flattened, 2–6 mm in diameter, with numerous constrictions and generally with surface spines and protuberances. Structure multiaxial.

 

Reproduction. Cystocarps born in inflated ends of lateral spinous branches.

 

Distribution. From the North-west Cape region to the Perth region, W. Aust. Mauritius. Madagascar.

 

Habitat. Epilithic in the subtidal and in intertidal pools.
