Cormous, perennial, herb, 0.4-1.5 m high. Fl. orange-red/yellow, Jul to Oct. Brown sandy clay or clayey loam over laterite, black sand, granite. Hills, disturbed woodlands. Distribution: South-west. AW, ESP, GS, JF, SWA and WAR.

General Biology. Growth form. Geophyte. Life form. Annually renewed corm. Reproduction. Primarlily seed, also corm offsets. Dispersal. Primarily birds, also water and soil. Time to first flowering. 4 years. Fire response. Generally survives fire.

Notes. Ripe seed are glossy orange.

Additional information. Origin. South Africa. History of use/introduction. Garden escape.

Suggested method of management and control. Spot spray glyphosate 1% + Pulse® before flowering. Read the manufacturers' labels and material safety data sheets before using herbicides.
